Arsenal beat West Ham United 5-2 at the London Stadium on Saturday evening thanks to a stunning 26-minute first-half attacking display.
The Gunners started off brilliantly, with a Gabriel header opening the scoring before a sublime team move put them 2-0 up.
And it only got better, with Martin Odegaard’s penalty and a Kai Havertz strike meaning they were 4-0 up on 36 minutes.
Miraculously, West Ham were soon back in it after Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Emerson struck twice in as many minutes, though Bukayo Saka converted another penalty to make it 5-2 at half-time.
There was plenty of expectation ahead of the second half but it turned out to be a drab affair, with neither side having any chances of note as the visitors closed out the match to return to second in the Premier League table.

Arsenal’s first half for the ages crushes sorry West Ham in Premier League thriller
20:54 , Chris Wilson
Arsenal plundered another hatful of goals at West Ham as they climbed up to second in the Premier League with a frenetic 5-2 victory.
The Gunners can now put their feet up and watch title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City try to take points off each other on Sunday after what was a breathless encounter – or first half at least – at the London Stadium.
Just as they had at Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday night, Arsenal had five different scorers, with Gabriel, Leandro Trossard, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka finding the net.
Up next
20:45 , Chris Wilson
Arsenal’s next match is a huge home game against Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United – that kicks off at 8.15pm on Wednesday, 4 December.
West Ham travel to Leicester in their next game, in a match which could have a bearing on the eventual relegation places – that one begins at the same time on Tuesday, 3 December.
Lopetegui: “Overall, I am frustrated”
20:39 , Chris Wilson
West Ham boss Lopetegui also spoke to Match of the Day, and he said that “overall, I am frustrated in the first half”.
“We deserved two goals, but they didn’t deserve five. We were unlucky in the decisions, in my opinion. The first goal I think it was a block.”
On Fabianksi fouling Gabriel, he says: “I think it was a bit soft. We were unlucky. We have to do better for sure. We didn’t take good decisions in a defensive way – that’s why it was a strange match. The team showed character to compete.
“We were unlucky with the decisions today. We asked before the match, the referee with the block, as a coach we have to know the limit. This week we have to do better in our individual actions in a defensive way.”
“It is always difficult to not stay on the bench because you can’t help the team and I was very frustrated.”
Bowen: “There was a lot down to us”
20:31 , Chris Wilson
West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen also spoke to Sky, and he says that “there was a lot down to us, how we were without the ball and a couple of mistakes as a team”.
“Set-pieces we worked hard knowing they were a threat. Two penalties and they’re just frustrating goals to concede.
“We were fighting back and we got to 4-2. I felt if we got in at half-time at 4-2 then there was an opportunity.”
On the second half, he adds: “Then in the second half we had a go. The fans were brilliant, but ultimately we weren’t good enough. The positive is we play in 72 hours and games are coming up thick and fast. Tomorrow is a new day and it is all focus towards Leicester.“
Arteta speaks to Sky
20:24 , Chris Wilson
Arteta also has a word with Sky, and emphasises that Arsenal had to “respect that they have tremendous players upfront”.
“I was happier with the first 30 minutes rather than the last 15 minutes of the first-half that’s for sure. We started incredibly well, so positive, so much energy and a lot of quality. We were a real threat.
“Thank goodness we scored the fifth and then that allowed us to play a different game in the second-half and manage it a lot more.”
He adds that his players “take a lot of ownership. the way we score in open play, the combinations, [it’s] really impressive.
“It’s that connection, getting the players in the right positions, then it’s timing and execution.
He adds that Saka is “a player that every game has to make something happen, and that reflects in the scoreline. Really good.”
“We’ve done it today in a really convincing way, and tomorrow we enjoy the match, a beautiful game of football.”
Arteta: “We made it crazy”
20:15 , Chris Wilson
Mikel Arteta has spoken to BBC’s Match of the Day programme, and he says that Arsenal allowed the game to become crazy.
“We made it crazy, we played so well at the start of the game. We scored early goals and then they score one immediately after kick-off and then another one – then it was game on.
“We have to manage the game – we did that really well. The last two games were tricky and to score goals is a big one.
“We knew before the game we were going to make substitutions because of the state of players, but we have to manage that. Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko come in, Jorginho was excellent. I am very pleased.”
He adds that for the second half, “the message was to not relax and to go for more.”
Timber speaks to Sky
20:05 , Chris Wilson
Jurrien Timber is also speaking to Sky, and he says that the game was “fun to play in” at times.
“It was fun to score a lot of goals. We played well, and the second half we killed the game.
“Obviously we felt very strong. We need to keep this momentum going because we have a big game coming up.
On his return from injury, he says that he was helped by “the people around me pushing me. You’re only as good as the people around you”.
“I think we have a big squad with a lot of good players, and we showed that last week and this week again.
“We have so many games, I think when we train we’re really focused.”
When asked about the match between Liverpool and City tomorrow, he says: “I think also for City and Liverpool, every Premier League game is hard. I’ll be prepared for Wednesday against United.”
Saka: “Let’s keep this form going”
19:55 , Chris Wilson
Man of the match Bukayo Saka is the player who speaks to Sky, and he emphasises that Arsenal made a “very strong start”.
“It was a very strong start, and we played similar to this last year, so we knew we wanted to, and we did that.
“I’m just looking to constantly improve, and create and score goals for this team, and I’m doing that right now. I’m enjoying my football,” he adds.
“I’m taking a lot of pleasure, I like to score and create, but the biggest pleasure is to win and get three points. Let’s keep this form going.
“The last three games we’ve been back to our best way of playing, we’re fluid, dynamic, the rotations look good.
“We need to continue like this.”
Saka on for the assist record?
19:50 , Chris Wilson
Today was Saka’s 10th assist of the season so far. The record in a season is 20, held by Thierry Henry – could the England winger reach that by the end of May?
FULL-TIME! West Ham 2-5 Arsenal
19:45 , Chris Wilson
That result means that Arsenal move to second, however briefly, on 25 points. Chelsea could overtake them if they beat Villa by three goals – that match begins at 1.30pm tomorrow.
City could also return to second if they manage to beat Liverpool tomorrow. Arsenal are now six points behind Liverpool ahead of that match.
West Ham remain in 14th, though they are still six points ahead of the relegation zone.
FULL-TIME! West Ham 2-5 Arsenal
19:40 , Chris Wilson
So, an intriguing game in east London comes to an end and Arsenal move to second in the table.
We saw the bet of Arsenal at times in the first half, though they will be disappointed with conceding those quick-fire goals. However, with one of them being a free-kick, it’s hardly like it was a mini-meltdown.
The Gunners move into second and will be hoping that the six-point gap with Liverpool stays at roughly the same number by this time tomorrow evening.

What a chance, even though it doesn’t matter.
There’s a great through ball played into the Arsenal box and Ings latches onto it, taking the touch past Fabianski. He’s pulled it wide and he shoots on the spin, dragging it across goal and narrowly wide of the far post.
There’ll be five minutes of added time here, though it seems like almost everyone in the stadium wants this to end sooner rather than later.

The Gunners weren’t done there though, with fortune on their side as they won another penalty and Saka converted for 5-2.

Match facts
17:15 , Chris Wilson
Arsenal have lost just one of their last 16 Premier League away games against West Ham (W10 D5), winning this exact fixture 6-0 last season.
Since the start of 2022-23, Arsenal have lost just two of their 26 London derby matches in the Premier League (W18 D6). One of these was against West Ham, which was the only one of the 26 games in which they’ve failed to score (0-2 in December 2023).
Having won 10 of their first 11 Premier League away games in 2024 (D1), Arsenal are now winless in their last four on the road (D2 L2). It’s their longest such run without a win since a run of seven between December 2019 and June 2020, the final six games of which were Mikel Arteta’s first in charge of the Gunners away from home.
Only Mohamed Salah (16) has been involved in more Premier League goals this season than Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka (12 – 4 goals, 8 assists). Indeed, Saka has both scored and assisted in three different games this term, with only Salah again doing so more (4).
How the table looks
17:10
With all of the 3pm kick-offs having finished – and with Brighton drawing 1-1 against Southampton yesterday – Arsenal have the chance to go second outright for just under 24 hours (at least).
The Gunners currently sit in fifth on 22 points, level with Chelsea and one behind Manchester City and Brighton, so a win would take them two points above those two sides (with City obviously playing tomorrow).
They would also cut Liverpool’s lead to six points, however briefly.
Match facts
17:05 , Chris Wilson
West Ham have lost their last two home London derbies in the Premier League, going down 2-0 against Fulham and 3-0 against Chelsea. They last lost three in a row in December 2019, while they last did so without scoring in December 2008 – both runs included defeat to Arsenal.
The Hammers have earned seven points from their last three Premier League home games (W2 D1), as many as they had from their previous nine at the London Stadium (W1 D4 L4).
Following their 2-0 win at Newcastle last time out, West Ham are looking to pick up consecutive Premier League victories for the first time since March. Meanwhile, they could keep three consecutive clean sheets for the first time since a run of four in December/January last season, the third game of which was a 2-0 win over Arsenal.
No player has scored more Premier League goals for West Ham this season than Tomás Soucek (3). 17 of his last 18 strikes for the Hammers have either put them one goal ahead (12) or drawn them level (5) in the match.

Lopetegui: “It is about the players on the pitch and on the bench”
16:50 , Chris Wilson
Julen Lopetegui, who is serving a touchline ban this weekend, told the media that it doesn’t matter as much because “it is about the players on the pitch and on the bench, who are ready to help the team to be able to compete against the best team in the Premier League, in my opinion”.
He added that Arsenal have “incredible players and a very good coach”, so today’s game will be a “big challenge”, before going on to praise Arteta’s “fantastic career as a coach”.
“He is managing Arsenal in a fantastic way. They have two teams, with top players, so we have to be ready but always put the focus back on ourselves and believe in ourselves to compete.”
Arteta: “Winning lifts the energy and confidence”
16:40 , Chris Wilson
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Mikel Arteta said that he “doesn’t link character to winning”.
“This team showed unbelievable character against Inter and lost, they showed it against Chelsea and didn’t manage to win. The same players, the same intentions, being more efficient and winning matches – that’s the difference.
“Winning lifts the energy and confidence. They were two big wins and now it’s about consistency, getting that momentum, taking it even further against a good opponent on Saturday and trying to replicate the performances to win the game.”
He added that if Liverpool continue “with the numbers they’re producing and the amount of games they’re winning”, then his side need to be near perfect to win the title.
“But the focus is on us, maintaining the consistency of performances that will give us the right to win a lot of games. This is a long run,” he added.
Team news

Mikel Arteta has made just two changes to the side that beat Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Team news

The line-ups will be announced around 4.15pm, so here’s a reminder of the early team news.
The most notable omission for West Ham will be seen on the sidelines, with Lopetegui banned from the touchline after picking up his third booking of the season against Newcastle.
In a boost for the Hammers, Edson Alvarez returns from a recent suspension and his available for selection once again. Mohammed Kudus will meanwhile serve the last of his five-match ban.
Arsenal’s defensive injury woes may have been further exacerbated in midweek after Gabriel Magalhaes was forced off against Sporting with five minutes to play, with Arteta citing that the Brazilian was withdrawn after feeling ‘discomfort’.
This comes after Ben White underwent an operation to address a long-standing knee problem over the international break, which will leave him out of action for a number of months. Takehiro Tomiyasu is also unavailable due to a knee injury.

Arsenal are back in action on Saturday evening as they make the short trip to West Ham United for an all-London Premier League clash.
The Gunners are in high spirits off the back of an emphatic Champions League victory in midweek, dismantling Sporting CP in a 5-1 thrashing at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
After getting back to winning ways against Nottingham Forest last weekend, Mikel Arteta will be eager for his side to keep up their recent return to form against the Hammers, who will similarly go into the contest with renewed confidence.
Julen Lopetegui experienced a much-needed reprieve in the West Ham hot seat after sealing a vital three points away at Newcastle on Monday, defeating the Magpies 2-0 in an impressive victory.
While the win was enough to spare the Spaniard his job for at least another week, the visit of Arsenal poses a much tougher task for Lopetegui, who is in desperate need of a positive result at home.
