Cleveland City Council faces last-minute rush on redistricting due to surprise state election

CLEVELAND, Ohio – An unexpected state election in May means that Cleveland City Council will likely rush through the final steps of its once-in-a-decade redistricting process.

The city charter gives council until April 1 to finalize its new maps, which will include the elimination of two wards due to Cleveland’s population loss in the 2020 U.S. Census. But last week, the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections dramatically accelerated council’s timeline, saying it now needs the maps by early January so it can finalize voting precincts.
