Lynchburg, Va. — The University of Lynchburg women’s basketball team is set to host its first conference competition of the season when Washington and Lee visit Turner Gym on Saturday, November 23 at 1 p.m.
The Hornets (1-3) are coming off their first victory of the season in assertive fashion against Wilson last week, 70-38. Lynchburg scored 18 points in each of the last three quarters and held the Phoenix to a combined 22 points across the 45 minute span to earn the win. Freshman guard Audra Petty led the team offensively with 16 points while adding three rebounds and two steals. Junior forward Bree Spainhour made an impact on the glass with a team-high nine rebounds. She contributed all around the court with 12 points, five assists, two blocka and two steals.Â
No. 7 Washington and Lee comes into the contest riding a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating Emory and Oglethorpe in the Emory Tip-Off. Mary Schleusner paces the team with 27.0 points per game and 14.7 boards per affair so far this season. Her performance in the Emory Tip-Off earned her the USBWA DIII National Player of the Week honor and placed her on the D3hoops.com Team of the Week.
Since 1995, Lynchburg owns a 27-24 advantage in the series between the two squads. Each of the last four meetings between the Hornets and Generals have gone to WLU, most recently with a 75-62 finish on Jan. 31, 2024.
So far this season, senior guard Olivia Harris has been an significant leader for the Hornets, tabbing a double-double against William Peace with 18 points and 12 rebounds while having the highest point total in a game for Lynchburg with 20 points against Marymount. Harris averages 11.8 points per outing this season.
Following Saturday’s contest, the Hornets will host N.C. Wesleyan to start the final month of 2024 on Sunday, December 1 at 2 p.m.
