Cooper Rush is the interim starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Dak Prescott is set to miss the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury that will require surgery. The Cowboys made him the highest-paid player of all-time ahead of the season, but will put their faith in Rush for the remainder of the season. 

Rush has been in the league for a few years, but is by no means a household name. While he plays for Dallas now and resides in Texas, he is not a native Texan. Here is where Rush is from and where he played football in high school and college.

Cooper Rush hometown

Rush was born in Charlotte, Michigan in November 1993. He spent most of his life living in Michigan, only moving once he made it to the NFL. 

Where did Cooper Rush grow up?

Rush grew up in Lansing, Michigan. Lansing is about 20 miles northeast of Charlotte, so the quarterback didn’t move around too much growing up.

Rush went to Lansing Catholic High School. It was a small school with only 500 students enrolled and Rush was a three year starter at QB. 

Rush led his team to back-to-back undefeated seasons in 2010 and 2011. They never won a state title, but they were the runner-up in 2011. He set state records, throwing for five touchdowns in one quarter and he had eight in the same game.

Rush was a three-star quarterback coming out of high school. He had official offers from Central Michigan and Toledo, with preferred walk-on spots at Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern and Western Michigan. 

Rush ultimately decided to attend Central Michigan. He redshirted his freshman year, but played for the Chippewas from 2012-2016. Rush took over as the starter in 2013 and led Central Michigan to a 6-6 overall record and a 5-3 conference record. 

The Chippewas had back-to-back 7-6 seasons in 2014-2015, despite undergoing a head coaching change in 2015. In his final season, Rush finished his career at Central Michigan going 6-7. The Chippewas made three bowl games with Rush under center, but didn’t win any of them.

Cooper Rush joins the Cowboys

Rush went undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft. He signed with Dallas and spent three years on the team’s practice squad. Rush then started the 2020 season with the New York Giants, but was cut halfway through the season, and was re-signed by Dallas. He has played in 31 career games for the Cowboys.
