Chappell Roan Brought Her Signature Sparkle to the ‘Saturday Night Live’ Stage

Then, after a quick change backstage into a gingham two-piece (with a fresh manicure to match!), Roan’s second performance offered a different treat for fans: This time, she sang “The Giver,” a new song seeming from her forthcoming second studio album. Both the country-pop tune and the set design took the Willard, Missouri, native back to her roots.

While much of Roan’s glam (namely, her hair and makeup) stayed the same, certain small details look her from haunted to hill country, like the tiny gingham bows that now adorned her locks. A heart-shaped crown hanging from the proscenium—which called to mind the tiara Roan wears on the cover of The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess—was also incorporated into both scenes.

“We needed to find a way to combine the two sets because of the quick change between the two,” Jones says. “It was really fun and interesting to see what would come up creatively, trying to find the common denominators between the two.”
