The Olympic Games are underway from Paris!

When it comes to the medal count, the United States is the favorite to win the most medals. China is unlikely to overtake the U.S. in the overall medal haul, but has a chance to win more gold medals than the Americans.
So which country is leading in medals after the first day of competition? Here is a look at the Olympic medal count (and keep reading for some Team USA highlights from Day 1).

The last Summer Olympics in which the United States did not top the gold medal table was in 2008 in Beijing.
Countries always get a medal bump being the host nation, and France is expected to almost triple the number of gold medals it won in Tokyo.
Team USA Highlights: Day 1
FIRST U.S. MEDAL
There were a total of 13 gold medal events on Sunday. There were suppoed to be 14, but Men’s Street skateboarding was postponed to Monday because of the rain.
But what’s the best way to start the first day of Olympic competition? Cook’N Bacon.
Team USA’s Kassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon, that is. The pair, who have been friends since they were 8 years old, earned a silver medal in the women’s synchronized 3m springboard final.
It was the first medal of the 2024 Games for Team USA.
China’s first gold medal of the games was in shooting mixed team air rifle.
USA-AUSTRALIA CONTINUE RIVALRY IN THE POOL
Americans Jack Alexy, Hunter Armstrong, Caeleb Dressel and Chris Guiliano combined to win the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay for Team USA’s first gold in the Paris Olympics.
The Americans finished with a time of 3:09.28 to capture their third straight Olympic title in the event.
Australia came in second with a time of 3:10.35 and Italy claimed bronze with a time of 3:10.70.

Australia flipped the script n the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, taking the gold medal over the U.S. and setting an Olympic record time of 3:28.92 in the process.
Team USA took silver, with an American record time of 3:30.20, while China took bronze.
The four swimmers earning medals for Team USA are Simone Manuel, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske.

KATIE LEDECKY, GRETCHEN WALSH SHINE
In individual finals, star U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky won her 11th Olympic medal on Saturday, winning bronze in the 400m freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
She clocked a time of 4:00.86 to finish behind Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, who finished in 3:57.49 to win a second-straight gold medal in the 400m.
Meanwhile, Connecticut’s Gretchen Walsh broke the Olympic record in the women’s 100m butterfly semifinals with a time of 55.38 seconds. Walsh challenged her own world record time of 55.18.
Fellow American Torri Huske posted the second-best semifinal time of 56.0.
The 100m butterfly final will take place on Sunday at 2:40 p.m. ET.
